Expo 2025 Osaka – Singapore Pavilion

Inspired by Paul Klee’s quote, “A line is a dot that went for a walk,” our multimedia animation for the Singapore Pavilion at World Expo 2025 in Osaka brings to life a vivid, playful vision of Singapore through diverse styles and storytelling.

2025

In late 2023, we were presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: to create 4 animation multimedia acts for the Singapore Pavilion and showcase our work on the world stage.

Taking cue from the architectural design and the overarching theme “Where Dreams Take Shape,” the red Dream Sphere motif quickly became the key visual language that anchors and connects all four films. You will be immersed in the single red dot that transforms into lines, shapes, and ultimately, entire worlds.

Canvas of Dreams

This introduction film showcases a dynamic swirl of dream spheres that form diverse vignettes of aspirations, collectively revealing a tapestry of larger-than-life parallel dreams unfolding across the nation.

Larger Than Life

Employing a similar stylistic approach to our NDP 2021 work “The Road Ahead”, we animated larger-than-life characters set against real-life backdrops of iconic Singapore landscapes. Each scene beautifully hand drawn to life, revealed through the magic of the Dream Sphere.

Moving Constellations

Dream spheres gather and connect to form a dynamic constellation of aspirations, moving through abstract space to form glowing lines and streaks that reshaping into figures that dance across the screen.

A Thriving Island

This next film takes viewers through a fantastic ride through the lens of a dynamic flying camera – taking the POV of our native animals as they trot, fly, and swim through diverse landscapes, all nestled within the city.

From Lines to Flight

2D Magic

Harnessing the charm of 2D hand-drawn animation, we created dynamic, flowing movements through the wildlife’s various habitats.

A Touch of Whimsy

Morphing transitions create a single-take, immersive narrative experience through the journey.

A Home Reimagined

We follow a magical story of a boy flying across time with his evolving community, growing from a young child to an adult with a family of his own in a whimsical, Peter Pan-style adventure. Through this mesmerising voyage through time and space, we reimagine the new possibilities for our homes of tomorrow.

From Youth to Age

It Takes a Village

In addition to secondary background characters, we developed a “mini-figure” system - a matrix of various character design elements to create a diverse range of character designs to populate our world quickly and efficiently.

We Built This City

Inspired by city-building games like SimCity, we designed the neighbourhood with a modular, puzzle-piece system with vibrant, inviting colours. The  isometric design approach that creates a fresh and coherent design language for this new world,

City of Possibilities

Employing an impressionistic approach in this final act, we paint a hopeful vision of the future - a City of Possibilities shaped by imagination, dreams, and potential. Combining detailed research on emerging innovations such as biophilic buildings and sustainable energy, and brought to life through illustrative world-building, each frame becomes a portal into what the future brings.

The Shape of Tomorrow

Our artists had the exciting challenge of designing the future – from transportation to architecture. We took from real-life innovations, sprinkled with doses of speculative imaginations, to imagine what tomorrow would look like.

Sketching the Future

Inspired by long horizontal Chinese scroll paintings, we designed a long-panning world to create an immersive and seamless experience as we travel through various scenes.

From Dawn to Dusk

This colour script shows the progression from cool morning light to natural green tones, then to warm, golden sunset colours reflecting the shifts in the passage of time and an overall feeling of warmth and optimism throughout the journey.

TreesSG

Meet our iconic Heritage Trees – the Pink Mempat, Rain Tree and Tembusu! Voiced by the talented Jaime Chew, Dwayne Tan and Remesh Panicker and accompanied by mesmerising looped animations, these interactive TreesSG illuminate each trees' distinct personality, characteristics and dreams for the future.

Circles of Life

Inspired by phenakistoscope technique, each Tree consists of continuous animated loops of the specific flora and fauna that call these Trees its home. It all comes together in a seamless, continuous loop that symbolize Nature’s cycle of growth and renewal.
